Iranian Scientists Shine in Geneva with Breakthrough Cancer Technology

In a notable achievement in the field of cancer research and pharmaceutical innovation, a team of Iranian researchers and innovators received the Bronze Medal and the Special Award for Best Medical Invention at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025. Selected among more than 1500 inventions presented by innovators from around the world, the team was recognized for its innovative technology in the fields of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences, entitled:“A Novel Drug Delivery System Based on Magnetic Composites and Organic Materials for Targeted Delivery of Anticancer Drugs to Liver Cancer Cells.”The event was held from 9 to 13 April 2025 at Palexpo, Geneva, Switzerland.

The Innovation Team:

Dr. Hamed Aghazadeh: Inventor and researcher with expertise in cancer research, stem cells, regenerative medicine, drug delivery systems, and pharmaceutical formulation. He is a microbiologist, holds a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering (M.Pharm.Eng) from the University of Tehran, and is a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) candidate.
Dr. Reza Ranjbar: Inventor, physician, and researcher in the field of internal medicine. He holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and is board-certified in Internal Medicine by Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. His professional and research activities focus on clinical research and the development of innovative approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of internal diseases, with particular emphasis on integrating evidence-based medicine with emerging medical technologies.
Dr. Mahsa Salehi Rad: Inventor and researcher specializing in medicinal chemistry, medical sciences, and nanotechnology. She graduated as the top-ranked Master’s student in Medicinal Chemistry and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry. Her research experience includes the design and development of pharmaceutical compounds, medical nanotechnology, advanced drug delivery systems, and interdisciplinary health-related research. She is the author and co-author of more than 10 publications in reputable international journals and has an established academic and research record in innovation and technology.Dr. Fatemeh Kabiri: Inventor, pharmacist, and researcher specializing in pharmaceutics, with expertise in drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical formulations, nanomedicines, and nucleotide-based therapeutics. She holds a professional Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics (Industrial Pharmacy) at the same institution. She is a member of the National Elites Foundation and has received the Special Award for Best Technology and a Gold Medal at the 2026 Silicon Valley International Invention and Innovation Competition and Festival in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. She has also contributed to international projects and maintains active involvement in the pharmaceutical industry and specialized pharmacy practice.
Dr. Reyhaneh Nasr Azadani: Researcher and inventor specializing in cancer research, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. She holds two Master’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering, with specializations in Bioelectricity and Biomaterials, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Bioengineering at McGill University, Canada. She has received numerous international honors, including Gold Medals and Special Awards from invention and innovation events in Nuremberg, Germany; Silicon Valley, USA; and Kingston University London, as well as Gold Medals from invention competitions in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. She has also published research articles in reputable international journals and scientific books in English.Dr. Ramin Jalili: Inventor, physician, and researcher in internal medicine. He holds a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and board certification in Internal Medicine from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. A Novel Drug Delivery System Based on Magnetic Composites and Organic Materials for Targeted Delivery of Anticancer Drugs to Liver Cancer Cells. Dr. Hamed Aghazadeh, Chief Executive Officer of NoyanGen Biotechnology Research Company and one of the inventors of the project, told our correspondent that the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025 was held from 9 to 13 April 2025 at Palexpo, Geneva, Switzerland, with the support of the Swiss Federal Government, the Mayor of Geneva, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA), as well as scientific and research organizations, inventor-support institutions, and ministries responsible for science, education, and research from various countries.Dr. Hamed Aghazadeh further stated that the event brought together inventors from leading universities in the United States and Europe, as well as scientific and research institutions representing more than 45 countries, including Switzerland, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Romania, Russia, Croatia, Malaysia, Hungary, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, South Korea, and Taiwan. With more than 1,500 inventions, participants competed across more than 25 scientific and technological categories, encompassing medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, engineering, technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, environmental protection, safety, and industry.
This broad and diverse participation reflected the distinctly international nature of the event and its role in bringing together innovators from different regions of the world at Palexpo in Geneva. Supported by major international organizations active in the field of invention and innovation, the exhibition is regarded as one of the world's prominent international forums for scientific innovation and technological invention and represents an important milestone within the global innovation community.According to Dr. Hamed Aghazadeh, the inventions were evaluated by an international and multidisciplinary jury comprising university professors, technology specialists, intellectual property experts, and industry leaders.The evaluation process was conducted through a rigorous, transparent, and impartial framework designed to ensure that only the most outstanding inventions received recognition.Among more than 1,500 participating teams representing 45 countries at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025, the Iranian team achieved third place globally in the fields of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences.A Novel Approach to Targeted Drug Delivery for Liver CancerExplaining the scientific basis of the project, Dr. Hamed Aghazadeh stated:“Today, the development of optimized and more effective approaches to cancer therapy is of critical importance.
One of the major strategies in the development and evaluation of novel therapeutics involves the use of drug carrier systems capable of directing therapeutic agents toward specific target tissues.”Drug-loaded and charged microparticles, particularly when combined with biodegradable polymers and conjugated with specific therapeutic agents such as trastuzumab and cisplatin, can provide valuable capabilities for drug loading, controlled transport, and targeted delivery.A broad range of carrier platforms has been investigated for advanced drug delivery applications, including micelles, liposomes, nanoparticles, dendrimers, liquid-crystalline systems, hydrogels, and drug conjugates.The newly developed technology is an advanced targeted drug delivery platform based on magnetic composites and organic materials, specifically designed for the precise delivery of anticancer agents to liver cancer cells.The system has been developed with the objective of:• Enhancing therapeutic specificity and targeting precision;• Improving drug accumulation and uptake within tumor tissue;• Reducing unintended exposure and potential damage to healthy cells;• Optimizing the pharmacological and therapeutic performance of anticancer agents; and• Contributing to the development of next-generation intelligent drug delivery systems for liver cancer therapy.
The primary objective of the project was to design and develop an advanced drug carrier capable of achieving efficient drug loading, desirable and controlled release characteristics, prolonged circulation or functional half-life, and low toxicity.The findings suggest that this advanced drug delivery platform has the potential not only to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of anticancer agents, but also to represent a significant advancement in the development of precision-targeted drug delivery systems.This multifaceted therapeutic approach holds considerable promise for advancing liver cancer treatment and may contribute to a substantial improvement in the effectiveness of anticancer therapeutic strategies.
