UK Petrol, Diesel Prices Hit New Three-Year High Amid War on Iran in Fresh Blow for Drivers
UK fuel prices hit fresh highs amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, hitting drivers hard at the pumps once again.
Petrol climbed to 169.68p a litre on Monday, while diesel jumped to 191.68p, according to the latest RAC figures, The Sun reported.The rises mean it now costs more than £93 to fill up a 55-litre family car with unleaded, and over £105 for a diesel model.The new prices have surpassed Sunday’s previous Iran war-related highs of 169.52p for petrol and the 191.54p diesel record set back on April 15.RAC head of policy Simon Williams said, “Fuel prices hit new Iran War highs on Monday with petrol climbing 169.68p and diesel hitting 191.68p, surpassing Sunday’s petrol high of 169.52p and the diesel high of 191.54p set on 15 April.”“This takes the cost of filling up a 55-litre family car with unleaded to over £93 and diesel to more than £105,” he added.He added that both fuels are now at levels last seen in early August 2022, shortly after the Ukraine war began, with prices climbing 8p a litre since the start of September alone.Williams said, “Both fuels are now at prices last seen in early August 2022, just a few months after the start of the Ukraine War, following price rises of 8p a litre since the start of September.”“And with oil well over $100 a barrel, there’s no end in sight to high pump prices and the pain it brings to drivers who depend on their vehicles,” he added.
He warned that diesel prices could even overtake the record high of 199.05p set back on June 25, 2022, though petrol remains someway off its all-time record of 191.53p from July 3, 2022.Williams said, “In fact, the average price of diesel may be on the way to overtaking the record high of 199.05p set on June,25, 2022. Petrol, however, is still a long way from its all-time record of 191.53p on July, 3, 2022.”The RAC is now urging drivers to shop around rather than get caught out paying over the odds at the pumps.
